Herbs
Eyebright
Parts Used: Dried aerial parts
Collection: Gather the whole plant while in bloom in late summer or fall and dry it in an airy place.
Eyebright is an excellent remedy for the problems of mucous membranes. The combination of ani-inflammatory and astringent properties makes it relevant in many conditions. Used internally, it is a powerful anticatarrhal and thus may be used in nasal catarrh, sinusitis, and other congestive states. It is best known for its use in conditions of the eye, where it is helpful in acute or chronic inflammations, stinging and weeping eyes, as well as over sensitivity to light. Used as a compress and taken internally, it is used in conjunctivitis and blepharitis.
Infusion: pour a cup of boiling water onto 1 teaspoonful of the dried herb and leave to infuse for 5- 1- minutes. This should be drunk three times a day.
Compress: place one teaspoonful of the dried herb in 1 pint of water and boil for 10 minutes then let cool slightly. Moisten a compress (cotton ball, gauze, or muslin) in the lukewarm liquid, wring out slightly, and place over the eyes. Leave the compress in place for 15 minutes. Repeat several times a day.
False Unicorn Root
Parts Used: Dried rhizome and root.

This herb, which comes to us via the Native Americans, is one of the best tonics and strengtheners of the reproductive system that we have. Though primarily used for the female system, it can be equally beneficial for men. It is known to contain precursors of the estrogens. However, it acts in an amphoteric way to normalize function. The body may use this herb to balance and tone, and thus it will aid in apparently opposite situations. While being of help in all uterine problems, it is specifically useful in delayed or absent menstruation. Where ovarian pain occurs, False Unicorn Root may be safely used. It is also indicated to prevent threatened miscarriage and ease vomiting associated with pregnancy. However, large doses will cause nausea and vomiting.
Decoction: put 1- 2 teaspoonfuls of the root in a cup of water, bring to the boil, and simmer gently for 10-15 minutes. This should be drunk three times a day. For threatened miscarriage, it may be drunk copiously.
Fennel
Parts Used: Seeds
Collection: The seeds should be harvested when ripe and split in the fall. The brown umbel should be cut off. Comb the seeds to clean them. Dry slightly in the shade.
Fennel is an excellent stomach and intestinal remedy that relieves flatulence and colic while also stimulating the digestion and appetite. It is similar to Aniseed in its calming effect on bronchitis and coughs. It may be used to flavor cough remedies. Fennel will increase flow of milk in nursing mothers. Externally, the oil eases muscular and rheumatic pains. The infusion may be used to treat conjunctivitis and inflammation of the eyelids as a compress.
Infusion: pour a cup of boiling water onto 1 -2 teaspoonfuls of slightly crushed seeds and leave to infuse for 10 minutes. This should be drunk three times a day. To ease flatulence, take a cup half an hour before meals.
