Herb

Garlic

Parts Used: Bulb.
Collection: The bulb with its numerous cloves should be unearthed when the leaves begin to wither in September. They should be stored in a cool, dry place.

Garlic is among the few herbs that have a universal usage and recognition. Its daily usage aids and supports the body in ways that no other herb does. It is one of the most effective antimicrobial plants available, acting on bacteria, viruses, and alimentary parasites. The volatile oil is an effective agent, as it is largely excreted via the lungs. It is used in infections of this system such as chronic bronchitis, respiratory catarrh, recurrent colds, and influenza. It may be helpful in the treatment of whooping cough and as part of a broader approach to bronchitic asthma. In general it may be used as a preventative for most infectious conditions, digestive as well as respiratory. For the digestive tract, it has been found that Garlic will support the development of natural bacterial flora while killing pathogenic organisms. In addition to these amazing properties, it will reduce blood pressure when taken over a period of time as well as reducing blood cholesterol levels. Garlic should be thought of as a basic good that will augment the body's health and protect it in general. It has been used externally for the treatment of ringworm and thread-worm.

A clove should be eaten three times a day. If the smell becomes a problem, use Garlic oil capsules; take three a day as a prophylactic or three times a day when infection occurs.

Herbs

Fumitory

Parts Used: Aerial parts
Collection: It should be collected when in flower, which is throughout the summer.

Fumitory has a long history of use in the treatment of skin problems such as eczema and acne. Its action is probably due to a general cleansing mediated via the kidneys and liver. Fumitory may also be used as an eyewash to ease conjunctivitis

Infusion: pour a cup of boiling water onto 1-2 teaspoonfuls of the dried herb and let infuse for 10 - 15 minutes. This may be drunk freely, but for skin problems it should be drunk at least three times a day.

Galangal

Parts Used: Rhizome
Collection: This herb is cultivated in China, where the rhizomes are unearthed in teh late summer and early fall, washed, cut into segments and dried.

Like many other valuable plants, Galangal is used little today. It provides us with a useful stimulating carminative that aids in flatulence, dyspepsia, and nausea, especially here due to a sluggish metabolism. It is reported to help in allaying seasickness. Mrs. Grieve tells us that the Arabs "use it to make their horses fiery."

Infusion: pour a cup of boiling water onto 1/2  teaspoonful of powdered rhizome and leave to infuse for 10- 15 minutes. This should be drunk three times a day.

Fairy Treat- Fairy Landscapes, Rings, and Paths

There are countless signs of fairies in Nature, and these often exist close to or within areas that are quite built up. You will soon come to recognize them intuitively. Wherever there is a strangely twisted tree, a tufted hillock, a pile of pebbles, or a cluster of wild flowers, there you may detect fairy workings. Be aware of unusual features or anything that looks mysterious, and especially of any place that feels as if it has its own "atmosphere" -- that will be because of the fairies. Feast your eyes on meadows filled with buttercups, daisies, and emerald grass, reedy river banks and bluebell woods, knowing that the fairies are close by.

Fairy Rings

One natural feature that has been especially credited to fairies is the "fairy ring." This is a circle of darker- colored grass, caused by the outward spread of a fungus. However, this is not the only type of ring that you will find in Nature, if you explore. Crop circles are a well-known natural phenomenon, but other vegetation (including grass) can also be found bent into a ring formation. Moss may grow in a circle, and trees may leave clear a patch of ground that is more or less circular. All these places are fairy haunts, where the Good Folk do what they so love to do-- dance. Tales are told of travelers who were led by sweet music into such a ring, whereupon they disappeared from sight, lost to the realm of Fairy. If you meditate within such a ring, you are more likely to be in tune with the fairies.

Fairy Paths

Fairy pathways may often be encountered. They might be narrow trails, apparently starting nowhere in particular and either ending abruptly or going toward a stone or mound that has no obvious use. Such paths are the sign of an interface between this world and the Otherworld. Spirit beings walk upon them and are more readily glimpsed in such places, especially if you do not stare directly at the path, but walk alongside it, aware of what you see from the corner of your eye. Such paths exist within dwellings too, and it may be along them that "ghosts" are seen to walk, apparently vanishing where the path--and the link between the worlds--ends.

Fairy Treat - Fairies Identity and the Cottingley Fairies

The information in this part of my blog is brought to you by The Fairy Bible penned by Teresa Moorey.

What are Fairies? Spirits, Angels, or Devils?

Fairies' True Identity

Proper fairies (with the exception of angels) are none of these things. They are beings who inhabit the Otherworld- a dimension of existence close to our own, which overlaps with ours from time to time and from place to place. For some people, the Otherworld, and its fairy denizens, is ever-present. Fairies are nature spirits, who tend growing things: they are the elemental entities of Air, Fire, Water, and Earth; they are the ancient goddesses and gods. Yes they may also be angels- spirit messengers bearing wisdom- and they can be creatures of mischief. Many are mighty and awesome; some are terrifying; plenty are helpful and playful; but all are fascinating.
Fairies demand (and deserve) respect. Learn their ways in order to experience the best of them.

The Case of the Cottingley Fairies

In 1917, Elsie Wright and her cousin Frances Griffiths claimed to have had encounters with fairies at their home in Cottingley, in the English county of Yorkshire. In 1920, the writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published an article in the Strand Magazine concerning the photographs of fairies taken by the two girls. Many people, including some respected thinkers, believed in nature spirits; but, needless to say, there was scornful criticism from some skeptics.
No one was able to probe anything conclusively until the cousins--by this time old ladies-- owned up to having faked the four of the five photographs; and many people believe the other photo was also a fake. Late in life, Elsie stated that she never really believed in fairies. Frances, however, was a very efficient matron in a boys' school and had a reputation for total honesty; after she died her daughter described her as a woman who could never tell a lie.

A Question of Credibility

Stories of encounters with supernatural beings frequently present problems. In the first place, people often choose not to believe what they see, and would rather assume they have imagined it all than face the fact that their view of "reality" could be deeply flawed. Some may be tempted into faking proof, in order to gain respectability. And there is a certain kudos to Otherworldly encounters that may encourage dramatization. Because the subject is extremely confusing, people involved in fairy incidents have a tendency to behave irrationally and inconsistently. This is not really very surprising, as fairies are usually mischievous creatures and are likely to bring muddles in their wake!
The Cottingley encounter was documented in 1997 in The Case of the Cottingley Fairies by Joe Cooper and was turned into the film Fairy Story.  But were there really fairies in the beck at Cottingley? If so, they should still be there, accessible to anyone with the innocent heart and clear eyes of a child.

Epilepsy- Natural treatments

A good while back someone asked me to look into the benefits of Medical Marijuana, because her first born is suffering tremendously from epilepsy and ADHD among other problems and the state we live in isn't one that the drug has become legal in for medicinal or recreational purposes.

While I found nothing in my herbal medicine books on the use of cannabis for Epilepsy and seizures I did find a handful of things worth looking into.

Herbs that will be in my alphabetical of the day blog that are said to help with Epilepsy

Hyssop, passion flower, skullcap, valerian

Listed in the book Ayurvedic Herbology East & West

Black Pepper is listed as a help for epilepsy
Brahmi is used for nervous disorders, mental disorders, epilepsy, senility, ADHD, Asperger’s syndrome, Autism, etc. It is both a sedative and a rejuvenating tonic for the nervous system. It is one of the most important herbs used in many neurological diseases and it can be effective in the treatment and management of Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, ADHD, autism, dementia, and possibly Alzheimer’s disease
Chitrak (White leadwort) Along with herbs like gotu kola, bacopa, and calamus, it has shown to be helpful in epilepsy, hysteria, and other nervous disorders.

Jatamansi is a tridoshic rejuvenative for the nervous system that shares the calming quality of Valerian, its close Western relative, without creating dullness of the body or mind. It has affinities to the mind, nerves, muscles, heart, liver, and GI tract. Its grounding effect on the mobile, erratic qualities of vata makes it useful in the treatment of anxiety, restlessness, spasms, tremors, convulsions, and even epilepsy. It has a sattwic quality that helps to cool and pacify the mind, improve memory and concentration, and enhance awareness. It is useful for hyperactivity and the inability to focus, so it is especially helpful for children labeled ADD and ADHD.

Dwarf Morning Glory is one of the best rejuvenative herbs for the mind and nervous system. It pacifies all three doshas and is often given along with other mental rejuvinative herbs like gotu kola, brahmi, jatamanisi, and calamus. It is helpful in cases of nervous debility, depression, epilepsy, psychosis, ADD, memory loss, and insomnia.

Valerian Root is best known in both Ayurvedic and Western herbalism as a desative herb with powerful antispasmodic properties. It has a grounding quality to the mobile or erratic quality of vata and a direct effect on the muscles and nervous system.

Inspired by a Rash.

A friend of mine posted a photo of her legs covered in a horrendously looking painful rash. They are treating her for Uticaria (Hives).
My legs every summer end up covered in some type of dermatitis, rash, poison, and hives, because I just refuse to stay inside away from things that cause me allergic reactions. I feel her pain. Though, my outbreaks are generally much smaller than hers, they have at times brought me to tears with discomfort.  Those of you who know me well, know that I’m not easily brought to tears over skin discomfort.

In lieu, of all this it got me thinking, what exactly can you do for rashes, hives, poison etc. Yes ladies and gents I broke out the books!

Ayurvedic Herbology -

Coriander 1 cup boiling water onto 1 teaspoon bruised seeds let infuse in closed pot for 5 minutes.  Drink before meals
Fresh cilantro is one of the best home remedies for cooling the blood and relieving hot itchy rashes such as hives and poison Ivy. Blend a cup of fresh cilantro leaves in a blender with just enough water to make it semi-thick paste then apply to the rash and hives. Also, cilantro juice can be squeezed out from the pulp and gently rubbed onto the rash and left to dry

Equal parts
Epsom salts
Baking soda
Sea salt
Place several scoops (coffee scoop size) of combined salts into a warm running bath. Then take a small handful of granulated kelp (seaweed) and tie it in a large muslin bag and place in the tub while its running. Don’t be tempted to completely fill the bag with kelp – it expands to almost double.
Kelp has the ability to draw out impurities through the skin while nourishing through the skin at the same time. The salts will not only soften the skin but also reduce inflammation, aches, and pains!

Plantain
Mash plantain leaves and apply to all manner of common irritations. It works on nettle rash, sunburn, bleeding, stings, bruises, bites, and so on.
For larger areas you can make a tea out of the leaf, dip a soft cloth in the tea and lay the cloth on the affected area.

Yarrow

Take one big handful of dried yarrow and simmer in 1 quart of water for ten minutes, then strain into the tub. Used to relieve pain from inflammation

A little share from the Book of Faces

Side note: I had to change all the magic to only have a "c." I find it teeth clinching that some people think adding a "K" enhances the meaning of the word. Magic is over used by today's society, so is the word love. No one has changed its spelling. So, changing the way magic is spelled doesn't really add to or change the meaning or make it special to me. I really dislike it spelled that way. I don't want it on my blog. So, keep in mind that this original article was written with a "k" at the end of magic and I have removed it because of personal preferences. Image may contain: bird
Yeolde Enchanted Witchery
Notes on spell casting basics
If you ask ten witches how to cast spells you will likely get ten different
Answers, because each of us has our own way of working. Magic is a very
Individual thing. Some witches prefer candle spells, others like image
magic or Cauldron spells . . . There is no right and wrong in this, just what feels
right To you, what works and what doesn't.
I will tell you how I cast spells, but that doesn't mean this is the
best Way for you to work. You have to start, to practice and experiment, until
you Find your own style, find what works best for you. Creativity is of great
Importance in spell-craft.
I think of magic as being of two types, major and minor. Ritual or
Ceremonial magic, which includes casting a circle, is the most effective.
Ordinary magic is worked without a circle. It can also be very effective,
Provided your Will is strong enough and focused properly.
RITUAL MAGIC
WHERE
Any place that has good energy, is quiet, private, and without
interruptions Will do. I usually do spells in the kitchen because most of what I need is Already there. It's also the safest place in the house to burn things. Good
for You if you have a special place like a grove or garden available to you. If
not, Don't let it stop you.
WHEN
Spells are usually performed according to the lunar cycle:
Waxing moon for spells of invitation, growth or increase
Example: money spells
Waning moon for discovering inner secrets and spells of
Banishing, binding or
Decrease
Example: spells to end loneliness or financial problems
Full moon for:
Maximum power, coven work, sex magic, love spells
Workings of culmination There is great wisdom in this but I must admit that as an urban witch who can't see the moon from her apartment windows, I pay no attention to the moon Whatsoever. I did follow it, however, whenever I lived in a place where I could See the moon each night.
Spells can also be performed in accord with the Zodiac. Sun or moon in
Astrological sign for:
Aries: battle - beginnings
Taurus: money spells - sex magick
Gemini: communication
Cancer: psychic work - lunar magick
Leo: leadership - solar power
Virgo: purification
Libra: balance - work in law or for justice
Scorpio: power
Sagittarius: honesty - expansion
Capricorn: overcoming obstacles
Aquarius: healing
Pisces: psychic work - endings
Five Steps
INTENTION:
Intention is the focus of your spell and the absolute will to succeed. I
try To never do a spell unless I feel it well up inside of me beforehand. Spells
Don't work unless you are able to focus your Will. Your intent must be clear
or Your spell may have unintended results.
PREPARATION: Assembly of tools and materials
The spell actually begins at this stage because your Will starts to
focus Itself as you gather the herbs, select the candles, choose the incense,
decorate The altar and lay out your tools. Knowledge of correspondences is essential Here, so that you select materials
Appropriate to the spell.
Incense, candles, music and ceremonial dress, makeup or masks can be
used to Make sacred space, set the mood for a spell. You must have something to
Represent each Element - earth, air, fire, water - on the altar or working
Surface.
CAST THE CIRCLE:
Call corners (also called calling quarters)
Cast the circle, invoking the Lords of the Watchtowers. Who are these
Guys, anyway? And why do you need to call upon them when you cast a magic
Circle?
Magic relates to both time and space. Ancient peoples divided space

Subdivided it, but the four basic directions are the crucial ones. They
assigned Deities to guard each of these quarters, deities to whom the power of each Quarter accrued. The Lords of the Watchtower can be male or female. By
invoking Them we call upon their spatial powers to guard and inform our magic circles.
Cultures represented in the invocation lists range from Asia through
Europe And Africa to the Americas, illustrating the universality of the division of
Space into the cardinal points. You can invoke any gods or goddesses who
appeal To you, but these are examples of mythologically consistent invocations:

Raise power. You should feel it between your hands, like the force of two
magnets that repel each other, as you invoke the Lords or Ladies and cast
the circle.
THE SPELL:
Perform the spell, reciting its words and carrying out whatever actions
it requires. The words of a spell should be said aloud, in a commanding voice.
This is the Word that goes forth and comes into being, so mote it be.
Manifestation of word into deed is the essence of magic.
CLOSE THE CIRCLE:
Close the circle and ground the power you have raised. Clean up. Carry out
any after-spell actions that the spell required.
CORRESPONDENCES
Think of correspondences as lists of ingredients. What exactly do you do
with them?
friendship:
Planet: Sun - Venus
Zodiac: Aquarius
Number: 3
Invoke: Gilgamesh and Enkidu - Mitra, for intimate
friendship
Plant: lemon - rosemary - passionflower
Jewel: rose quartz - alabaster - turquoise - emerald, to
strengthen friendship
Suppose you want to make new friends, and you write or find an
appropriate spell for this. Using the correspondences, you could:
Do the spell at noon, when the Moon is in Aquarius.
Place three lemons in an alabaster bowl on the altar.
Fill your chalice with passionfruit juice, make a potion of it
by charging it with the spell, then drink it down before you close the circle.
You could also refrigerate the potion or make a syrup of it and drink some each
time you will be meeting new people.
Wear a turquoise ring until you make a new friend
POWER
The power, like the Good Witch told Dorothy, is in you. You effect
magic with your Will. Spells, incantations, candles, herbs, crystals and all of
that just channel it in the desired direction.
Eight ways to raise power:
1] Meditation or concentration
2] Chants, spells, poetry or invocations
3] Trance, or projection of the astral body
4] Incense, drugs or alcohol
5] Rhythm: dancing or drumming
6] Binding, to control the flow of blood
7] Flagellation: light scourging, traditionally 40 lashes
8] The Great Rite: ecstatic sexual union
I usually use incense and psychic concentration, drawing power from
wherever I can feel it: the jet stream, an approaching storm, trees, rain, the city,
my love, my anger, my desire, the Sun or Moon, even the Universe itself. You
have to experiment with different methods in order to find the best way for you
to raise power. You will come with practice to recognize the state of psychic
readiness that tells you when you are prepared to make magic.
Ways to boost your power:
invoke the Mighty Ones (the Old Gods)
work with spirits or elementals
work with other witches
go barefoot, to draw on earth energy
Power is connected to the moon. It increases as the moon waxes,
decreases as it wanes. Witches are most powerful at the full moon. Many witches wear their hair long because cutting your hair can diminish your power. This is likely why Joan of Arc had her hair shorn before she was burned at the stake.
DIRECTING SPELLS
For a spell to work in the intended way it must be properly directed.
You can do this with words or images, putting representations of the person or
thing you want the spell to affect on the altar while you cast the spell. Old
spells sometimes call for hair or fingernail clippings, but I've never used
anything creepy like that. We have cameras now.
A person need not be present for you to work magic on, for, or against
them. Anything associated with the person can be used to direct the spell:
documents, personal items, letters, gifts, pictures - whatever you have. You
can also write the person's name on a piece of paper or a candle and use that.
POPPETS
A poppet is a humanoid figure. It could be a root, a 'voodoo doll', a
chess
piece, a Barbie doll, a puppet, a paper doll, a piece of twisted wire. . .
anything you have at hand. You say,
"Poppet, I name you _____________."
The figure then becomes that person, for magical purposes. If you have a
photograph of the person their face could be affixed to the doll. Poppets
should be safeguarded or destroyed once a spell has done its work.
TIME
Sometimes the effect of a spell will be astonishingly immediate, other
times you will have to wait a while. I'd repeat a spell if I saw no effect after
two weeks, making the second spell stronger. If I still saw no effect, I'd
assume the spell was not in accord with the Universe and move on to something else. If it's something that's too important to you for you to drop, try coming at it
from another direction.
DISTANCE
Spells can be worked over great distances. I have often cast spells that
worked from one continent to another. A personal connection to the people or
situation involved is helpful with this.
HERBS
When spells call for herbs you can plant them, pick them, burn them, eat
them, brew them, strew them, make floor washes, decorate the altar with them
put them in a mojo bag . . . whatever seems appropriate to the spell.
MATERIALS
Don't make yourself crazy trying to acquire exotic items. Use whatever
is available to you. Be creative. Learn correspondences so that you can find
good substitutes when a spell calls for something you don't have.
Herbs
Florist shops, the supermarket, and health food stores (for essential oils
and herbal teas) are good places to start. Dried herbs sold in jars as
spices usually work just fine, but fresh herbs are better. You have sources all
around you. Identify the trees that grow on your block or in your yard. Find out if there is a farmer's market or botanical garden near you. Plant an herb
garden. Study herbalism.
Candles
Any type of candles can be used, from the hardware store, supermarket,
card shop or wherever. Tapers or votives are good. Unscented candles are best
unless you can identify the scent as appropriate to your spell, such as vanilla
candles for love spells. The colors of the candles should also be appropriate. A
stock of candles in various colors is useful to a witch.
Incense
Joss sticks, smudge sticks, little cones . . . the form isn't important, but
the scent should suit the spell. Some plants and resins can be burned directly
as incense. Try card shops, head shops, the Internet and other religions.
Learn to make your own incense, if need be. Witches always have incense on hand, for use in spells or as offerings.
Statues/icons/pictures/posters
Try museum gift shops, magical supply shops, bookstores and the Web.
Paper There's no telling what ordinary paper is made from, so I like to use
papyrus or linen bond. Papyrus and flax (for linen) are plants that can be
made into paper. Papyrus comes from Egypt and may be difficult to obtain, but
linen bond is available from stationers and office supply stores.
ORDINARY MAGIC
Small magic is worked without a circle, often with visual aids. The
possibilities for this kind of magic are limitless. Inventiveness is the
key here.
My usual method is to assemble things on a tray: candles, incense, herbs
the elements, stones or crystals, and things that represent what I am trying
to manifest. As with any spell, I make careful choices in selecting the
materials. I leave the tray like that for several days or a week, until I feel it has
done its work. I may light the candles or burn the incense if I feel like it, or
talk to the tray in passing, stating my purpose aloud. If I see no results I
recast the spell formally, with a circle.
Spell bottles can also be used in this way. Everything needed for the
spell is assembled in a bottle, which can then be buried.
Balloons can be used for spells. Blow one up, write a name or draw a
face on it saying,
"Balloon, I name you _________."
You can then:
pop it to deflate someone's overblown ego let a little air out of it every day to decrease someone's influence set it adrift (on air or water) to release someone, or release yourself
Meditate on ordinary items like keys, ice, pockets, bird cages, mirrors
and photo albums. Use the Other way of thinking, and I am sure you will invent
more spells than I ever could.
