Herb

Elderberry

Parts Used: Bark, flowers, berries, leaves. 

Collection: The flowers are collected in the spring and early summer and dried as rapidly as possible in the shade. The bark and berries are best collected in August and September. 

The Elderberry tree is a veritable medicine chest by itself. The leaves are used primarily for bruises, sprains, wounds, and chilblains. It has been reported that Elderberry Leaves may be useful in an ointment for tumors. Elderberry Flowers are ideal for the treatment of colds and influenza. They are indicated in any catarrhal inflammation of the upper respiratory tract such as hay fever and sinusitis. Catarrhal deafness responds well to Elderberry Flowers. Elderberries have similar properties to Elderberry Flowers with the addition of their usefulness in rheumatism.  

Infuision: pour a cup of boiling water onto 2 teaspoonfuls of the dried or fresh blossoms and leave to infuse for 10 minutes. This should be drunk hot three times a day

Juice: boil fresh berries in water for 2-3 minutes, then express the juice. To preserve, bring the juice to the boil with 1 part honey to 10 parts of juice. Take one glass diluted with hot water twice a day. 

Ointment: take three parts of fresh elderberry leaves and heat them with 6 parts of melted Vaseline until the leaves are crisp. Strain and store. 

Mrs. Grieves Cooling and healing ointment. Take 0.5 pound fresh Elderberry Leaves, 0.25 pound fresh Plantain Leaves, 2 ounces Ground Ivy, and 4 ounces fresh Wormwood. Cut into small pieces and heat in 4 pounds of Vaseline until the leaves are crisp. Strain and press out the ointment for storage. 

Elecampane

Parts Used: Rhizome

Collection: The rhizome should be unearthed between September and October. The large pieces should be cut before drying in the sun or artificially a temperature of 120 - 160 degree F. 

Elecampane is a specific for irritating bronchial coughs, especially in children. It may be used wherever there is copious catarrh formed- for example, in bronchitis or emphysema. This remedy shows the complex and integrated ways in which herbs work. The mucilage has a relaxing effect accompanied by the stimulation of the essential oils. In this way, expectoration is accompanied by a soothing action that in this herb is combined with an antibacterial effect. It may be used in asthma and bronchitic asthma. Elecampane has been used in the treatment of tuberculosis. The bitter principle makes it useful also to stimulate digestion and appetite. 

Infusion: pour a cup of cold water onto 1 teaspoonful of shredded rod. Let stand for 8-10 hours. Heat up and take very hot 3 times a day.
