Epilepsy- Natural treatments

A good while back someone asked me to look into the benefits of Medical Marijuana, because her first born is suffering tremendously from epilepsy and ADHD among other problems and the state we live in isn't one that the drug has become legal in for medicinal or recreational purposes.

While I found nothing in my herbal medicine books on the use of cannabis for Epilepsy and seizures I did find a handful of things worth looking into.

Herbs that will be in my alphabetical of the day blog that are said to help with Epilepsy

Hyssop, passion flower, skullcap, valerian

Listed in the book Ayurvedic Herbology East & West

Black Pepper is listed as a help for epilepsy
Brahmi is used for nervous disorders, mental disorders, epilepsy, senility, ADHD, Asperger’s syndrome, Autism, etc. It is both a sedative and a rejuvenating tonic for the nervous system. It is one of the most important herbs used in many neurological diseases and it can be effective in the treatment and management of Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, ADHD, autism, dementia, and possibly Alzheimer’s disease
Chitrak (White leadwort) Along with herbs like gotu kola, bacopa, and calamus, it has shown to be helpful in epilepsy, hysteria, and other nervous disorders.

Jatamansi is a tridoshic rejuvenative for the nervous system that shares the calming quality of Valerian, its close Western relative, without creating dullness of the body or mind. It has affinities to the mind, nerves, muscles, heart, liver, and GI tract. Its grounding effect on the mobile, erratic qualities of vata makes it useful in the treatment of anxiety, restlessness, spasms, tremors, convulsions, and even epilepsy. It has a sattwic quality that helps to cool and pacify the mind, improve memory and concentration, and enhance awareness. It is useful for hyperactivity and the inability to focus, so it is especially helpful for children labeled ADD and ADHD.

Dwarf Morning Glory is one of the best rejuvenative herbs for the mind and nervous system. It pacifies all three doshas and is often given along with other mental rejuvinative herbs like gotu kola, brahmi, jatamanisi, and calamus. It is helpful in cases of nervous debility, depression, epilepsy, psychosis, ADD, memory loss, and insomnia.

Valerian Root is best known in both Ayurvedic and Western herbalism as a desative herb with powerful antispasmodic properties. It has a grounding quality to the mobile or erratic quality of vata and a direct effect on the muscles and nervous system.
