A living person's reflection is generally thought to be a likeness of their soul, or contain a strong link to it. Around the world, some superstitious people still believe that their picture is so closely related to their soul that spells can be wrought by anyone who has their image. While there are people who simply do not like to have their photo taken, there are others who will cover their faces with their hands to protect their souls.
In Africa, the Basuto people believe that a crocodile snapping at a man's reflection in the water has the power to seize the reflection and drag it underwater, and so kill the man. The Zulu tradition says that it is dangerous to look into a dark pool because a hidden spirit may seize the reflection and steal your soul.
