Herbs

Lungwort Moss

Parts Used: Dried Lichen.
Collection: This lichen grows on Oak Bark and more rarely on heather stems or mossy rocks.

This lichen has properties that have been recognized in European herbal medicine for many generations. It may be safely used wherever a soothing expectorant is called for. It may be used in all varieties of bronchitis and especially where there is an asthmatic tendency. It may be used in children's coughs with much benefit.

Infusion: pour a cup of boiling water onto 1 teaspoonful of the dried lichen and leave to infuse for 10 minutes. This should be drunk three times a day.

Male Fern

Parts Used: Rhizome freed of root.
Collection: The rhizome is unearthed in the fall

Male Fern is one of the most effective treatments for killing tapeworm. It is, however, potentially poisonous in overdose and should only be used under medical supervision.

Mallow

Parts Used: Flowers and leaves
Collection: The flowers and leaves are collected and dried with care between July and September

Mallow may be used in very similar ways to Marshmallow, to which it is generally inferior. Internally, it may be used to aid recovery from gastritis and stomach ulcers, laryngitis and pharyngitis, upper respiratory catarrh, and bronchitis. Externally, it may be used as an addition to bathwater or as a compress against abscesses, boils, and minor burns.

Infusion: for internal use, pour a cup of boiling water onto 2 teaspoonfuls of the dried herb and leave to infuse for 10 - 15 minutes. This should be used three times a day
Compress: for external use, put 1 teaspoonful of the herb in a cup of water, bring to the boil, and simmer gently for 10-15 minutes. This decoction can be used for a compress.

Marigold

Parts Used: Yellow petal (florets).
Collection: Either the whole flower tops or just the petals are collected between June and September. They should be dried with great care to ensure there is no discoloration.

Marigold is one of the best herbs for treating local skin problems. It may be used safely wherever there is an inflammation on the skin, whether due to infection or physical damage. It may be used for any external bleeding or wound, bruising, or strains. It will also be of benefit in slow-healing wounds and skin ulcers. It is ideal for first-aid treatment of minor burns and scalds. Local treatments may be with a lotion, a poultice, or compress, whichever is most appropriate. Internally, it acts as a valuable herb for digestive inflammations or ulcers. Thus it may be used in the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers. As a cholagogue, it will aid in the relief of gallbladder problems and also through this process help in many of the vague digestive complaints that are called indigestion. Marigold has marked anti-fungal activity and may be used both internally and externally to combat such infections. As an emmenagogue, it has a reputation of helping delayed menstruation and painful periods. It is in general a normalizer of the menstrual process.

Infusion: pour a cup of boiling water onto 1-2 teaspoonfuls of the florets and leave for 10 - 15 minutes. This should be drunk three times a day.

Marjoram, Wild

Parts Used: Aerial parts
Collection: The herb is gathered as soon as it flowers, avoiding the larger, thicker stalks.

Marjoram is a widely used herb in folk remedies and cooking. As a stimulating diaphoretic, it is often used in the treatment of colds and flu, its use here being similar to the use of Hyssop. The antiseptic properties give it a use in the treatment of mouth conditions as a mouthwash for inflammations of the mouth and throat. It may also be used externally for infected cuts and wounds. The infusion is used in coughs and whooping cough. Headaches, especially when due to tension, may be relieved by a tea of Marjoram or by rubbing the forehead and temples with the oil. The oil may also be used for rubbing into areas of muscular and rheumatic pain. A lotion may be made that will soothe stings and bites.

Infusion: for internal use, pour a cup of boiling water onto 1 teaspoonful of the herb and let infuse for 10 - 15 minutes. This should be drunk three times a day
Mouthwash: this is made by pouring 1 pint of boiling water onto 2 tablespoonfuls of the herb. It is then left to stand in a covered container for 10 minutes. A gargle is made from this whenever needed by reheating it. Gargle for 5 - 10 minutes, three to four times a day.
